Foot & Hand Reflexology
Reflexology
Completely on a whim, I decided to learn about reflexology. Jumping in with both feet I immersed myself in a 250 hour course, complete with in person hands on practice and earning a Certification from an approved school by the American Reflexology Certification Board.
I use light to medium pressure and will adjust per your request. The work is done fully clothed (minus socks and shoes) on a massage table or semi-seated for comfort.
I offer a non-toxic paraffin oil hand treatment which must be requested ahead of time for preparation. There is soft music playing and a choice of aromatherapy spray is offered. Session can be upgraded to add Reiki as well.
Styles & History
This style is an integrative approach of different styles on the western hand of the theory. Based on Zone Therapy (Dr. William Fitzgerald, ENT) Studies from Eunice Ingham (PT), Dr. Joe Shelby Riley (osteopath) and several others over time, it came to the United States in 1913.
Eastern Reflexology, Chinese and Thai methods use much firmer pressure and sometimes tools working along the meridian pathways and chakras.
Ancient Egyptian drawings show people working on hands and feet. Historical evidence suggests a timeline exists parallel in China, or possibly from Egypt to India to China.
Italian, Marco Polo had a hand in bringing the practice in Europe.
In many other countries, it is common for medical doctors to refer patients for reflexology like they would for physical therapy. It's a widely accepted CAM (complimentary alternative medicine).
What it is not:
It is not a massage. Nor am I a massage therapist. It is not a "foot rub". It's a manual technique using "thumb-walking" or with other variations of alternating pressure to specific areas of the feet, hands, outer ears and face- that result in an increased sense of well-being, increased/improved circulation, allowing for improved sleep, clear sinuses and can help with hormone imbalances. Some other positive side effects include pain relief.
The areas of the body worked on are said to reflect the body in a map, where pressure applied can possibly be sensed in the correlating area.
